The Junior School discuss ‘Kindness’ as a way to mark ‘Anti Bullying Week’. Assemblies and PSHE sessions have been based on the novel ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio.
Now a national bestseller, it features the story of 10-year-old Auggie Pullman, a boy with a craniofacial condition. The older children are reading the novel, or excerpts from it, and the younger children are reading a picture book story about the same boy called ‘We’re All Wonders’. The novel has also been made into a film starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as the boy’s parents, this is due to be released in Madrid in December.
The author wrote “When I first sat down to write Wonder, I wanted to create a book about a boy who had to face a world that didn’t know how to face him back. I hope I have opened readers’ eyes to the reality of living with a facial difference and am truly amazed by how much the book has resonated with children. Children around the world have embraced Wonder’s message to “Choose kind” in such a big and powerful way, by making it a rallying cry against bullying, social isolation, and the petty meanness that sometimes passes for normal in our day-to-day lives.”
