Physical EducationPhysical Education classes at Runnymede follow the Curriculum Guidelines and, at the same time, attempt to be interesting and varied. In the primary school children work on balance, co-ordination, movement, rhythm, throwing and catching, fitness and games that involve these skills. Students in Primary school are also introduced to athletics and other pre-sports that lead up to the real activity. Throughout years 7 to 11 students are taught different units on endurance running, fitness, basketball, football, volleyball, orienteering, net games, rugby, field and floor hockey, athletics, kick-ball, rounders and softball. Within the PE program we also organise an Inter House Cross Country, an Inter House Sports Day and we attend Inter Schools cross country, athletics, football and basketball competitions at both primary and secondary ages. Although all primary school Physical Education classes are taught on Runnymede facilities, this year the secondary school classes have been held at the local Municipal Sports Centre that is only a short bus ride away. We have had regular use of a sports hall, outdoor playing fields, full athletics track and field installations, and a swimming pool in June and September. This has been a great improvement for the PE and sports program at Runnymede, providing the school with adequate facilities and adding to the diversity of activities for the secondary school. We are now been able to offer and develop units, that are considered fundamental in all Physical Education programs, such as athletics and swimming. This re-structuring of Physical Education at Runnymede has required another teacher joining the department. Although Ms. Pérez originally came to the school as a substitute teacher during the third term of the previous academic year, she has joined us throughout this year to teach secondary school PE and work on improving and developing the extra-curricular sports activities program. It has been a real pleasure to have such a dedicated, hard working and popular teacher join this department. |
