Report of Pre-Accreditation Visit to Runnymede College

Date of Visit: 28th September 2007

Lead Inspector: James Shallcross

1. Introduction

Runnymede College was last inspected on 25th. April 2006. After that inspection, the school was recommended for full authorisation for pupils aged 3 years to 18 years. The report and its recommendations provided the starting point for the pre-accreditation visit.

The visit comprised a tour of the buildings and key facilities, discussion with the headteacher and senior staff, a brief scrutiny of documentation (as defined in the Schedule) and a work session on self-review with the senior management team.

2. Progress Since the Inspection

Runnymede College has made very good progress since the inspection and reacted positively to the recommendations in the report. In particular, there are significant improvements to the facilities.

  • A newly-constructed platform gives the Foundation Years direct access to play areas;
  • The gymnasium has been soundproofed and a heating system has been installed;
  • Shelter has been provided for Year 1;
  • A new physics laboratory has been built;
  • A new extension has been added which includes a library. Sixth form common room, and classrooms for two secondary departments.

In addition, the school has made good progress in information technology. In particular, there is a very extensive and efficient intranet system, and the School Manager information and communication system has been installed.

3. Main Findings

  • The school has a real determination to develop. Objectives have to be clearly defined in a school development plan but senior staff have a clear idea of what needs to be achieved;
  • The school has started to introduce processes and structures for school self-review, including pupil tracking, value-added, and classroom observation;
  • The senior management team are totally committed and enthusiastic;
  • Suggested areas for specific attention in self-review include assessment for learning, management appraisal, review of personal development and well-being, the use and impact of information technology, and curriculum design-particularly post-16.

4. Conclusion

It is recommended that Runnymede College be accepted for the NABSS Accreditation Scheme. The accreditation inspection should take place in April 2008.
