Introduction to the English Department

The Crucible
Sandra Heath in The Crucible.

Details of the Programmes of Studies are available for all secondary years.

In addition, there is an extensive recommended list of 'quality' novels. (Including translations). Students of Year 7 and 8 should use the list with advice.

At the beginning of Year 9, all texts studied in class are 'adult' in quality. That is not to descry all literature written specifically for 'children' or 'teenagers' or 'young adults' but to write specifically for a very restricted age-range is essentially limiting. Students mature at different times but some limiting features have been introduced to the lists in that some books are usually more accessible than others to younger readers. Therefore there is a short list of novels and short stories especially accessible for Year 9, a longer list for Year 10, even longer for year 11. The whole list is recommended for sixth-formers (to centenarians, if not senile)

The writer wishes to warn the reader that the list is a personal choice although every effort has been made to cater for as many tastes as possible. Sometimes an author who has written fifty novels is represented by only one novel; this does not mean the other 49 are poor. Hopefully the one will encourage the reader to read the others.

The writer of the list also wishes to point out that a few references will be inaccurate.

The writer bitterly regrets missing out great novels he has enjoyed but has forgotten. Why 'bitterly regrets' ? - because the writer wants to share his love and appreciation of literature - it is the key to good language and the understanding of people. Great fiction (and biography) explores truth, the experience of which should not be forgotten.

More details of each novel is available on the Runnymede Intranet (type; place; time) to facilitate people' s personal tastes. Some of these references might also be inaccurate.
