Year 10 Programme of Study:

Flanders
The History Department trip to Flanders: a water-filled trench in Sanctuary Wood.
  1. Core Content I: International Relations, 1919-1939
    The focus of this module is on the legacy of the First World War, the failure of the attempts to maintain peace and the causes of the Second World War. As well as familiarity with the content pupils priority should be given the opportunity understand and develop analytical extended writing skills. They should also be exposed to a variety of forms of evidence and encouraged to evaluate them critically.

  2. Depth Study: The USA, 1919-41
    The focus of the module is on the causes and consequences of the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression as this will be the subject of the coursework. Particular emphasis is given to the skills of tightly argued, well-supported historical writing and the appreciation of the nature of causation in history.

  3. Module: Core Content II: International Relations 1939-c.1989
    The focus of this module is on the causes of the Cold War and the reactions to it by both Superpowers. Two case studies - Cuba and Vietnam - will be examined. The final part of the core is an analysis of Soviet control over Eastern Europe, 1948-c.1989.

Year 11 Programme of Study:

  1. Depth Study: Germany, 1918-45
    Although the Depth Study covers the whole of the period 1918-1945, the focus is on the rise of Hitler, Nazi control of Germany and life in Nazi Germany. The coursework focuses on interpretation and evaluation of evidence.
  2. Depth Study: USA, 1919-1941
    The focus of this study in on the boom years of the 1920s, examining key features of economic and social history, followed by the Depression and reactions to it by the Republican and Democrat administrations of Hoover and Roosevelt.
  3. Revision Period
    The revision period before the GCSE exams focuses on exam technique, past paper practice and on review of the content.

Assessment

School assessment consists of regular homework tasks based on the IGCSE Objectives, past paper questions, evidence a work and extended writing. There are also periodic tests, exams each June and December and Mocks in March of Year 11.
GCSE Assessment: There are Three papers on the exam. Paper One tests all the content areas by essay. Paper Two is an evidence based exam. Paper Four replaces coursework and assesses all key skills.
