On the evening of Wednesday 18th November, Old Runnymedian Avinash Sukhwani, who graduated from the school in 2012, gave a fascinating virtual presentation offering an insight into his experiences at university and beyond.
After achieving 6 A* at A Level, Avinash studied at Cambridge, MIT and Harvard before going on to become an entrepreneur. Avinash is the co-founder of the start-up company Payflow, which attracted a financing of 1.6 million euros in the first six months of business, despite being founded during the Covid-19 pandemic.
During his presentation, Avinash shared with us the positives and negatives of studying at each of his chosen institutions, the elements that surprised him and what he would do differently if he were to do it all again. He then moved on to discuss his experiences of working as a strategy consultant at the multinational BCG. The final part of the presentation covered his two start-up enterprises, Rocket Internet and Payflow.
Avinash’s candid recounting of his experiences and what he has learnt from them was warmly received by parents and students alike. Choosing a selection of the many astute questions put forward during the Q&A, Avinash was both eloquent and informative in his responses.
This year, when most companies were forced to furlough their employees, Avinash was kind enough to offer online internships to VI Form pupils and Old Runnymedians at Payflow. During the last section of Wednesday's talk, we also heard from some of the talented individuals who interned at Payflow this summer: Antonio G from Year 11 and Alejandra J from Year 12, as well as Old Runnymedian Javier M, who is currently studying Electrical Engineering at Oxford.
We are delighted to have witnessed Avinash’s ascent in academia and beyond. It is especially gratifying to see his dedication to helping other individuals from the Runnymede community by offering them opportunities to work alongside him. It was a real pleasure to hear from him and from the students who have benefited from his support, and we look forward to seeing where his career will take him next.
